Prvé pivo v štýle Barley Wine vzniklo okolo roku 1870. Po anglicko-francúzskych konfliktoch v 18. storočí obchody medzi týmito krajinami ustali a Anglická šľachta ostala odrezaná od svojho obľúbeného alkoholického nápoja — vína typu klaret z oblasti Bordeaux. Alternatíva od neskúsených anglických vinárov neprichádzala do úvahy, a tak boli oslovení miestni sládkovia, v tej dobe jedni z najlepších na svete. Vytvorili extrémne silné, polotmavé pivo, ktoré kvôli svojmu obsahu alkoholu dostalo názov Barley Wine (jačmenné víno). V Anglicku bolo od doby vzniku až do svojho pozvoľného zániku dostupné výlučne vyšším vrstvám. Renesanciu zažilo v roku 1976, keď ho poprvýkrát komerčne navaril americký pivovar Anchor Brewing Company a urobil tak z neho jedno z celosvetovo najobľúbenejších archivovateľných pív.

The first beer of the Barley Wine style was born in 1870s. After the English-French conflicts of the 18th century trade relations of these countries froze and the English nobility became cut off from their favourite alcoholic beverage: clarettype wine of Bordeaux. An alternative from unexperienced English vintners was out of question, thus local brewers were approached, then being among the best in the world. They created an extremely strong, semidark beer, with its alcohol content granting it the name Barley Wine. Since its birth all the way up until its gradual downfall, in England it had only been available for the members of high society. Its renaissance came in 1976, when it was brewed for the first time commercially by an American brewery Anchor Brewing Company and it has been ever since one of the globally most popular vintage beers.
