Bitter je tradičným pivom ponúkaným v anglických baroch. Pôvodný Pale Ale (svetlý ale) bol prvým anglickým pivom, vareným zo svetlejších, na uhlí sušených sladov, no postupným poklesom ceny dovtedy málo dostupného chmeľu stúpala horkosť, a tak zdomácnel názov Bitter (horký). Z dnešného pohľadu však toto pivo nie je ani úpIne svetlé, ani výrazne horké. Varí sa v troch verziäch — najslabší Ordinary Bitter, silnejší Premium Bitter a najsilnejší Extra Special Bitter (ESB). Zatial’ čo Premium Bitter je vo väčšine prípadov vlajkovou loďou anglických pivovarov, predávanou najmä vo fľašiach a ESB je špeciálom príliš silným pre väčšinu anglickej populácie, Ordinary Bitter, ako už jeho názov naznačuje, je úplne najbežnejšou variantou čapovanou v takmer každom anglickom bare. Vyznačuje sa ľahkým, mierne karamelovým telom, bohatou ovocnou chuťou a stredne silnou zemitou horkosťou. Nízky obsah alkoholu ho radí do skupiny takzvaných „session” pív, vhodných aj na celovečerné popíjanie. Na britských ostrovoch sa tradične podáva nenasýtený, bez peny a pri takmer izbovej teplote, exportné verzie, ako je aj tá naša, sú však prispôsobené nám bližším kontinentálnym zvykom — chladené a primerane nasýtené.

Bitter is a traditional beer offered in English bars. Original Pale Ale had been the first of English beers brewed from paler coaldried malts, but with everdecreasing prices of previously hardly available hops, the bitterness had been rising, giving the Bitter its name. From today’s perspective, however, is this beer neither very light, nor exceptionally bitter. It is being brewed in three versions – the weakest Ordinary Bitter, stronger Premium Bitter and the strongest Extra Special Bitter (ESB). Between Premium Bitter being usually the flagship beer of many English Breweries sold in bottles, and ESB being too strong for most of the English folk, the Ordinary Bitter, as hinted by its name, is the most casual and is draught in nearly every English bar. It signifies in its light, slightly caramel body, rich fruity taste and reasonably strong earthy bitterness. Its low alcohol content makes it a session beer, suitable even for wholenight drinking. On the British Isles, it is served with no saturation, no head and at almost room temperature. The bitters intended for export, as is the one of ours, are however adjusted to our continental standards cooled down and saturated.
